Calgar-eton
Here's some differences I've noticed b/w the two great cities of Alberta. In all actuality the two cities have more in common than differences but that's no fun to talk about!! I haven't really decided my preference but one thing I do know is that I miss my fam and friends in Edmonton...and the funky pickle :).
- Calgary: The red mile Edmonton: Whtye Ave. Clearly Edmonton's night life is superior I mean here's my rant for Calgary.....every freakin club thinks it's all that. Most have "policy" that you have to be over 25 years old to get in (they basically use this rule to discriminate and let those under 25 into the club that they see fit)...oh AND and extreme choch (prep) dress code. Its like Calgary clubs are trying to be TO. Get over yourself. Not the vibe I would want to rock in the club...I mean you have to where dress shoes, dress pants, dress shirts for men and don't the forget skanky tops for women and how bout everyone just feel really uncomfortable all night; that sounds like fun (insert sarcastic tone here)! Edmonton has dress codes at a few places but is more relaxed. You can just go out with a group of friends and not have to critic what everyone is wearing, nervous that you'll be rejected at the door. I mean just b/c I go out in a hoodie and jeans doesn't mean that I will spend less at the bar! As Marc Labbe always brings up; skate shoes, hoodies etcetera most often cost a lot more than dress shoes and shirts so really "casual" dressers may have more and be willing to spend more money at the club. CHECKMATE: Edmonton.
- Calgary: STOP SMOKING!!!! No smoking in bar in 2006? What a joke. Come on Calgary, get out of the cave/ dark ages and come and smell the fresh, nonpolluted, noncancer causing air. Going out to the club is just not enjoyable when you come home drenched in the stench of eau d'cigarettes. If even the conservative US can ban it everywhere I think Calgary can step up to where Edmonton is: non smoking. Perhaps it's because the Calgary aldermen voted it down, coincidentally, they all smoke. I smell a conspiracy here....CHECKMATE: Edmonton.
- Calgary: faster roads...deerfoot, crowchild, glenmore, going up to 100+ km/h Edmonton...whytemud?? And 50km speed limits. CHECKMATE: Calgary.
- Calgary: spread out as hell. Edmonton: easier to get through. Speaking of roadways Calgary names them and has a screwed up quadrant system. Edmonton, bless your little hearts, has the old fashion 0-1million from east to west and 0-1million from south to north. No matter where you are you know where you are based on the street and ave number. CHECKMATE: Edmonton.
- Calgary: 1 hour from the mountains Edmonton: its got a river valley.....no comparison to the outdoor opportunities there. CHECKMATE: Calgary.
- Edmonton has cheap housing (and some would argue its because no one really wants to live there). Regardless, you don't have to spend your life fortune on buying a little place like in Calgary and that is a pro. CHECKMATE: Edmonton.
- Edmonton: University of Alberta; world renowned. Calgary: University of Calgary; not so much world renowned. CHECKMATE: Edmonton.
- Calgary: PT (Public Transport) is better organized, more accessible, and runs later. Edmonton's LRT only runs to the north and downtown...I mean these things really mattered to me when I didn't have a car!! CHECKMATE: Calgary.
- Sports teams....ok, I wont even comment as that is an issue dear to all the gentlemen's hearts and I don't really care either way....but from what I hear Calgary is superior :). CHECKMATE: questionable...?
- Edmonton: Funky Pickle, come on, you knew it would make the list somewhere. Calgary: does have amazing breakfast joints like Nellies and Phils...but they don't have the pizza Funky Pickle has and they don't serve to all the drunkards after the bars close. Case in point. CHECKMATE: Edmonton.
- Edmonton: dingy downtown, mostly consisting of the legislative buildings and apartment complexs. Calgary: an aesthetically beautiful downtown full of clean, shiny sky scrapers, parks and modern art. I guess it suits Calgarys uppity, flashy. new money kind of personality. CHECKMATE: Calgary.
Now, thats my list and if I dont get any comments on this one it means that no one reads this because I know that everyone and their dog has an opinion on this!!!
